School Board passes motion that creates special education parent facilitator/advocate position

It has taken several months but my motion that was supported by the Special Education Advisory Committee in June passed full board on September 7. This motion directs staff to work towards creating an arm's length Parent Advocate at the TDSB. This position will help parents understand and decide what special education programs are available at the school board and which might be best for their son or daughter. Currently there is some confusion among parents about what programs are available and which match various exceptionalities. I will keep you informed as the process moves forward.

The Barbados High Commissioner visits Beverley Heights MS to hear about Future Aces

H. E. Edward Evelyn Greaves, GCM made a visit to Ward 5's Beverley Heights Middle School on June 11. Mr. Greaves wanted to learn more about the success of the school's Future Aces program. The entire school came out to welcome the High Commissioner. The school has had one success after another over the last three years.

The Future Aces philosophy is based on the belief that positive attention contributes to and reinforces a person's self-esteem. Future Aces focuses on the positive rather than the negative, by recognizing and encouraging attitudes and actions that are desirable and constructive. Founder Herb Carnegie says that "being a Future Ace means being a good person with feeling in your heart."

Improving Special Education in Ontario

In an effort to bring real change to the delivery of special education in Ontario I brought two motions to the Special Education Advisory Committee on Monday night. In one motion, we are asking TDSB Director Chris Spence to ask the Minister of Education and other school boards to support a Special Enquiry into the funding and delivery of special education programs in Ontario. There certainly is a long way to go. The second motion asks the TDSB to hire a special education parent facilitator to help families navigate the complex programs and options in special education. These motions will come before the Board of Trustees at our June, 2010 meeting.

Plans are underway to bring new community hub to York Centre.

The TDSB Ward 5 and city Ward 10 have been short of community space for sometime. Numerous groups providing valuable programs and services have had a tough time finding adequate space. At the same time, the Bathurst-Finch area needs strong supports in health care and healthy living. I have been working for three years to correct this program. Now we are one step closer. A TDSB land parcel near Bathurst and Finch on the Northview Heights site has been declared surplus so a new community hub can be built by New Heights Community Health Centre. It is not part of the current field on that corner. Once built, the facility will provide employment and co-op opportunities for students, public space for use, and social and medical support services. The site will have a tree-lined walkway and other “green enhancements” to improve the public space. The cost of the project is partially covered by the federal and provincial governments and the United Way.

Toronto Lands Corporation Continues to show Leadership and Fiscal Responsibility

In 2008, I was among TDSB trustees who voted to establish the Toronto Lands Corporation. This is an arms-length entity that is responsible for the management, leasing, sales and redevelopment of TDSB surplus properties. The TLC also helped the TDSB save many of its swimming pools. I joined the board in spring, 2009. My colleagues include former Toronto Mayor David Crombie, Dino Chiesa, Jane Pepino, Annie Kidder, Hugh Heron, Jane Marshall and Trustees Bruce Davis, Chris Bolton and John Campbell. As of January 2010, the TLC has sold $38.7 million in surplus property and is receiving annual rental revenues of about $11 million. The TLC is a model of fiscal responsibility and is a great example of what public entities can do to reduce the burden of taxpayers.

Thank You: Skate for Haiti a Great Success

I would like to thank all the people who came out for a fundraising skate on Family Day, Monday February 15 help the people of Haiti. We also owe a great deal of thanks to Chesswood Arena for donating the ice time. The skate was free but everyone donated to Magen David Adom, a registered member of the International Committee of the Red Cross is appreciated. I have watched Torontonians from all walks of life dig deep to help this small devastated country and it says a great deal about the character of this great city.

Skate for Haiti to take place on February 15 at noon

I wanted to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and a successful New Year. In the past year we have made great strides making Ward 5 (York Centre) a great place to live. My staff has lobbied hard to get more trees planted and preserve green space. I have worked with many community groups to save our swimming pools, to put more funds into special education, and create new opportunities through community partnerships with our schools. We are working to have a new community centre built at Bathurst and Finch and create new after-school programs for youth. As always, I am available to help out in any way I can. Once again, thank you for your commitment to our local community.

Hundreds come to Tech it Away at Mackenzie

Tech it Away was a great success at W.L. Mackenize. The community filled two trailers with old electronics. By doing so the school will receive a credit of $10,000 at Best Buy. Another great program for a great school!

Ward 5's William Lyon Mackenzie and Best Buy have teamed up to host Tech it Away. This was a project I worked on during August. Please bring your unwanted electronics equipment to 20 Tillplain Road, North York(North of Sheppard Avenue off Wilson Heights Boulevard)from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM on Tuesday October 6, 2009. This is a great way to recycle old equipment and raise funds for the school.

Negotiations Continue between the TDSB and Secondary Teachers

Various media reports state that Toronto's secondary teachers could strike this fall. We hope not. And that is why we are continuing to negotiate a fair collective bargaining agreement. Here are some frequently asked questions about the negotiations.

Q. Under the Provincial Discussion Table (PDT) Agreement, what benefits would secondary teachers receive if a new Collective Agreement is reached with the Board?

Secondary teachers would receive a salary increase of 3% per year for 4 years (a total of 12.55% when compounded), an enhanced employee benefits package, as well as additional teachers for the system, which would reduce maximum class size caps over the course of the four-year agreement.

Q. Is the TDSB asking for an increase in supervision and coverage time for secondary teachers?

No. The current TDSB Collective Agreement allows schools to use a maximum of 37 half periods (each half-period is approximately 40 minutes) per school year per teacher for on-call coverage and supervision. However, there are restrictions in the current Collective Agreement affecting how schools are allowed to use that time. The Board is proposing to lower the cap and have greater flexibility in being able to use coverage. Lower numbers have been proposed, but given that negotiations are ongoing, what the number will be is dependent on the outcome of continued negotiations.

Q: What were the issues that the Board and OSSTF could not agree on?

The sticking point in these negotiations has been teacher supervision and coverage time.

Q. Why is the issue of supervision so important for TDSB?

Our students are our first priority and TDSB is committed to making the best use of our resources to ensure safe, nurturing and inclusive learning environments. Teachers’ visibility and leadership in all areas of the school is essential to providing a reassuring presence for students in their schools

TDSB believes that the teacher-student relationship is one of the most important factors affecting positive student outcomes. Supervision and coverage gives teachers and students more opportunity to interact outside of their own classrooms. Building relationships and establishing personal connections with students throughout the school enhances the learning environment for all members of the school community.

Q. What does “greater flexibility” mean?

Under the current Collective Agreement, principals are not permitted to assign “regularly scheduled supervision” for teachers during a lunch period, or in libraries, hallways or computer labs. Also, a teacher may not be assigned to cover for a teacher who is absent for the whole school day. This includes situations when a teacher may only need coverage for one or two classes during the school day or an emergency situation when an Occasional Teacher is not available.

Every teacher who is absent still will be required to call in for an occasional teacher. However, in rare circumstances where an occasional teacher does not pick up the assignment, the Board is looking for flexibility to assign coverage. TDSB is asking for these restrictions to be relaxed so that principals will have more ability to arrange coverage and supervision according to the needs of their school.

Q. Would teacher preparation time be affected if the restrictions on supervision and coverage time are changed?

No.

Q. Why were the restrictions necessary in the first place?

The previous provincial government increased the secondary teacher instructional load from 6 credits to 6.67 credits of instructional time. The restrictions were added when the current Collective Agreement was negotiated in 2001 to offset the impact of that increase on teachers.

The present government subsequently reduced teachers’ instructional load to the current levels. However, the restrictions were retained in the language of the Collective Agreement.

Q. How can I stay up-to-date with what is happening?

The regular school routine will continue for all staff and students once schools reopen in September for the 2009-10 school year. No job action has been announced at this time. Recently I had the opportunity to hike up to Kaaterskill Falls in Catskill State Park. It was a great experience to see one of New York State's most spectacular natural sites. I had tried to make it to the falls a few years ago, but the road was washed out.

In the final days of school I attended 11 graduations. It was a great thrill to share a few words with students, parents and educators. We have a great team here in Ward 5 (York Centre) and its great to see a good education system getting stronger.

I'm still working through the summer, but I still take some time out to do gardening. I planted 8 small trees, 3 bushes and got the hammock up.

W. L. Mackenzie C.I. Launches 50th Anniversary Celebrations

I had the honour of helping plant a tree in front of W.L. Mackenzie Collegiate Institute as that school launches its 50th anniversary celebrations. There are great events being organized for Spring, 2010 and I plan to be a part of them. Principal Helene Green has been a great inspiration and alumnus Linda Miller has been a fantastic organizer.

Director Gerry Connelly Leaves the TDSB

I have been working with departing TDSB director Gerry Connelly for almost three years. During that time, Gerry was the key note speaker at two of my ward forums and attended Martin Luther King Jr. ceremonies at Rockford PS. She is a strong supporter of social justice and fiscal responsibility and always worked in the best intersts of students in general and the needs of York Centre in particular. She will be working at the Ministry of Education and we wish her well.

Trustees approve a balanced budget

Trustees are legally required to balance their budget. At the June 29 Board meeting, Toronto District School Board Trustees approved a balanced budget plan of $2.5 billion for the 2009/10 school year. The plan invests in priority areas of teaching and learning, student success, and support for vulnerable students. By balancing its budget the TDSB has perhaps the best managed finances of major governments in Canada.

I tabled a motion that stopped cuts to special education.

TDSB has taken two important steps toward long-term budget sustainability and to address the impact of declining enrolment. The Toronto Lands Corporation (TLC) was established in 2007 to make the most of the Board’s under-utilized capital assets. The Better Schools, Brighter Future process takes TDSB to the next level through a multi-year strategy supporting investment in school consolidation, up-to-date programs and school buildings to meet the 21st century needs of students and communities.

“The approval this evening of a balanced operating budget for the 2009-10 school year by the TDSB Board of Trustees marks an important step by this board as it continues to demonstrate its resolve to manage its affairs responsibly,” said Campbell after three nights of budget debate.

“Tonight’s decision was preceded by a number of difficult decisions that have been made by trustees over the past few months.”

Case of H1N1 influenza detected at W.L. Mackenzie

A student or staff person at William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute has become infected with the H1N1 influenza virus, which is also known as the “human swine flu” virus.
Toronto Public Health is advising that the school should continue to operate as usual. This recommendation is consistent with guidelines issued by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Public Health Agency of Canada.

It is Toronto Public Health’s practice to notify the school when the first H1N1 infection has been confirmed in that facility. The H1N1 virus is now circulating in the community and precautions similar to those for seasonal flu should be taken. We encourage parents/staff to follow the precautions outlined in this letter, to help prevent the transmission of H1N1 and other influenza viruses.

Reporting to the Manager of Web Services, the Web Architect is responsible for all web based site architecture, infrastructure, planning, and execution of the strategic plan for TDSB Board-wide web services. A class of high school students at William Mackenzie C.I. on Monday, March 9, 2009 heard Cleoni Crawford, entrepreneur and fashion designer explain the "Summer Company" program and her acceptance to it, for students aged 15-29 whom are returning to school in the fall of 2009.

Moreover, Cleoni discussed in detail her business training and the hard work and long hours she has put forth into her business. For example, she touched upon how she manages cash-flow, how to draft a business plan, and track day-to-day expenses.

MPPs from all parties praise Ward 5 schools

Selected students from Northview Heights Secondary School and William Lyon Mackenzie went to the legislature on February 19 as MPP Monte Kwinter presented a private members' motion advocating for more opportunities to learn about science in Ontario's schools. All three political parties praised the students present. The Northview students were the founding editorial team for the Canadian Young Scientist Journal, and the Mackenzie students helped launch SWITCH, an initiative designed to power schools with wind and solar energy. Here is what Progressive Conservative MPP Peter Shurman said in the Legislature:

I want to thank my colleague for asking us to rededicate this province to promoting the learning of science, technology and mathematics here in Ontario. I too want to acknowledge the gallery guests. Two Toronto District [School] Board high schools are represented here, as he said. Students of William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute advanced the concept of powering schools through solar and wind power called Switch, for solar and wind initiatives toward change.
The students from Northview Heights Secondary School are the founding editorial team of the Canadian Young Scientist Journal, as my colleague has also mentioned, and they're here with my friend, Trustee James Pasternak, a very strong public servant. Trustee Pasternak has been a tireless supporter of both these initiatives and others, through the area of my colleague the member from York Centre, which is parallel to his. Dozens of parents come out to Trustee Pasternak's events because he is fully committed to his Ward 5 constituents in science, music, sports and special education.

In an effort to aprise the residents of Ward 5 (York Centre) with job opportunities, I bring to your attention openings at Queen's Park and Toronto Police Services.

The 2009 Queen's Park Summer Internship Program is now accepting resumes from
interested students who wish to be involved in the political process and
work in government. The program seeks highly motivated, energetic and
dedicated students who are looking to exercise and develop their skills
in organization, communication, leadership and research.

Interns will be placed in the Premier's Office, Ministers' Offices and
the Liberal Caucus Service Bureau. Assignments may expose interns to
the areas of communications, policy, research, and data base. Interns
will also participate in a variety of activities that will strengthen
their leadership and team building skills.

The internship program runs from May 4th until August 21st at Queen's
Park. All participants should be available for the entire length of the
program.

The salary is $12.50 - $15.00 per hour based on a 35 hour work week.

Any interested individuals are welcome to submit their cover letters and
resumes to summer.internship@liberal.ola.org. The deadline to apply is February 13th, 2009.

Trustees Pasternak and Matlow fight anti-Israel stand and intolerance

As a result of a motion from Toronto District School Board Trustees James Pasternak and Josh Matlow, the Toronto District School Board chair has sent a letter to Sid Ryan, President of CUPE Ontario, expressing strong disapproval about his recent comments regarding censorship of Israeli academic institutions, along with other comments made by Mr. Ryan.

Trustees Matlow and Pasternak thank Board Chair John Campbell, and members of the board, for their support and their principled stand against intolerance.

Here is the text of Chair Campbell's letter:

Dear Mr. Ryan,

The TDSB has been called the leading education system in the world for making students from diverse backgrounds feel welcome in school.
Educators from around the globe consider TDSB to be the benchmark for equity and inclusiveness. It was on this record that TDSB won a prestigious 2008 internationally recognised award for excellence in education (referred to by some as the Nobel Prize for Education).

This honour was based on, in no small part, the efforts of our
educational assistants, caretakers, school office staff, and other support staff. Every day the TDSB staff, who are represented by CUPE 4400, go to great lengths to create supportive school environments for every one of our students.

Balanced and thoughtful debate about world issues is an important
component of helping students to become critical thinkers and
responsible members of a democratic society. As a result, many of our Trustees, including me, were dismayed to read recently (among other remarks) of your call for CUPE Ontario to vote for sanctions by Canadian universities against Israeli academics and universities.

The nature and tone of your remarks are contrary to the spirit with which our staff, your member, support their students. And while your comments were directed at universities and not school boards, they can leave the impression that you think that children (and adults) from some cultures should be less welcome in our schools than others. This is contrary to both TDSB policy and to the daily commitment demonstrated by our staff who are members of CUPE 4400.

Your opinions matter: York Centre eyed as future site for Forensic Services and Office of the Chief Coroner

Recently I met with York Centre MPP Monte Kwinter to discuss the province's plans to locate Ontario's forensic services and Office of the Chief Coroner in Ward 5 (York Centre). It would be constructed on government owned land near Wilson Avenue and Keele Street. Your opinion is valued on this important decision. The public is welcome to visit an information trailor located at 1201 Wilson Avenue on Monday January 12 and Tuesday January 13 from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Here is some additional information from the ministry.

Ontario is seeking public input on the location of a new state-of-the-art
Forensic Services and Coroner's Complex.
The proposed site is a six-acre parcel of government-owned land in
Downsview at Wilson Avenue and Keele Street. It would house the Centre of
Forensic Sciences, the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Provincial Forensic
Pathology Unit. It will have the advanced technology necessary to support
growing needs and keep pace with the demands of the justice sector.
Over the next few weeks, details of the consultation and information
sessions will be communicated to area residents by mail and in local newspaper
advertisements. Information will also be posted on the ministry's website.
The proposed site will be subject to an environmental assessment study,
available for comment in January 2009. If approved, the new Forensic Services
and Coroner's Complex could be ready for occupancy in late 2012.

"We need to invest in new facilities and technology to improve
crime-solving and autopsy capabilities to keep pace with the increasingly
complex demands of the justice sector," said Minister of Community Safety and
Correctional Services Rick Bartolucci.

"The proposed Forensic Services and Coroner's Complex is an excellent use
of existing government lands and will bring construction and highly-skilled
jobs to this area," said York Centre MPP Monte Kwinter.

- Moving this project forward supports the Goudge Report
recommendations for a new, modern facility to house the Office of the
Chief Coroner and related forensic sciences.
- The Centre of Forensic Sciences investigated more than 10,000 cases
last year involving injury or death in unusual circumstances and
crimes against persons or property.
- The Office of the Chief Coroner conducts 20,000 forensic death
investigations every year, more than one-third originating in the
Greater Toronto Area.

"Self Respect Is all you Need" Assembly at Downsview SS

Recently I had a great evening at Downsview Secondary School. The students put on a performance and unveiled a mural on the theme "Self Respect is all you Need." Accompanying me were Trustee Soo Wong, Executive Superintendent Donna Quan, Superintendent Jeff Hainbuch, and Kathleen White-Williams. The program was driven by the nursing students from Humber Health Sciences and supported from Downsview SS Principal Maria Palermo.

Here is a selection of my remarks:

This program is truly important. It not only gives young Canadians a foundation in life skills it gives everyone of us the example of what becoming a great citizen is all about.

This is the parachute that many grade nines need. And this soft landing will contribute to a more successful journey through high school.

I have sat on over 40 suspension and expulsion hearings at the board. Many of these cases are sad and dark. And I wonder here today how many of these kids we could have reached with the great work of Trustee Soo Wong and her team of nurses.

Students often have a difficult time making the transition to high school and face some challenging issues. This initiative aims to build student self-confidence, foster relationships, and enhance a smooth transition into high school.

Our great responsibility as educators is that when students enter high school they have the personal attributes and support systems to succeed and feel good about themselves.

Today we salute nursing students and their teachers who are working with students to make Downsview Secondary School a healthier and safer place. This comes about because of the way we approach defeat; respect diversity of opinion; and knowing when to turn the other cheek.

Fifteen years from now many of the students in this building will be in the workforce – putting concepts into practice; creating wealth; building better communities.

I wish all students and their educators here much success. You can take comfort in the belief that self respect and self esteem are essential ingredients to fruitful years in high school and a becoming a great member of society.

Faywood PS inspires with character building

Good evening parents, students, friends. I also offer a special thanks to Ms. Uribe and Ms. Mandelbaum for putting this celebration together.

I have heard about the Toronto Police-Values Influences Peers program and it truly is remarkable. It not only gives young Canadians a foundation in life skills it gives everyone of us the example of what being a model citizen is all about.

Tonight is the celebration of an idea. A reaffirmation that character building is essential for student success and being a contributing part of our community.

When the world looks at Canada they see us as an example. At the Toronto District School Board we look to the students who fill this room tonight with a sense of pride.

Our great responsibility as educators is that when students leave our schools they take with them the understanding that the value of time in school is not only measured by a grade point average but by the strength of their heart.

Because the strength of our heart leads us to make smart choices.

And smart choices lead to restraint and restraint leads to civility. And civility leads to tolerance.

I don’t normally quote hockey players, but it was Wayne Gretzky who once said, “You can’t score from the penalty box.” And in the real world getting out in 2 minutes is just not going to happen.

It is pride that brings communities together; but it is hubris that tears us apart.

The world is just a healthier and safer because of the way we approach defeat; respect diversity of opinion; and knowing when to turn the other cheek.

Parents: students who attend this school and participated in this program will make smart choices and that you need not have a hand on a telephone waiting for a call from a son or daughter in trouble.

I conclude by once again congratulating students and their teachers and Toronto police services who helped with this program. There is a reason why I have lived in this area for over 20 years. It’s because of students like you.

To all who are here this evening, I want to wish you a safe and happy holiday season and New Year and I look forward to connecting with you in 2009.

The new inspiration of the Art Gallery of Ontario

On Educators' Night, I had the opportunity to tour the newly renovated Art Gallery of Ontario. I was thoroughly impressed with the vision of architect Frank Gehry and the composition of the various galleries. It is a great achievement. I have a lose connection with Mr. Gehry. Mr. Gehry and my father were in the same graduating class of cadets just as the Second World War was ending. As a reminder, the AGO is free on Wednesday evenings and from 3:30 PM to 5:30 PM Tuesday to Friday for high school students.

Over 40 people attended our Ward 5 Forum on November 24, 2008. The event took place at W.L. Mackenzie C.I. and the keynote speaker was TDSB Director of Education Gerry Connelly. Director Connelly's address was entitled New Thinking in Student Success. My speech was based on the 45 suspension and explusion appeals hearings that I have sat on. Entitled Suspensions and Expulsions: Musings of a Trustee, provided important and insightful information on the trustee deliberation process. Susan Wakutz, Business Development Office, TDSB spoke about new strategies in school fundraising. I would like to thank the following Mackenzie students for helping out: Haley Durkey, Cressan Genus, Bineh Kalra, Davy Li, Mike Lu, Abi Rao, Anu Sivarajah and Wajeeh Syed. I also want to thank Superintendents Gen Ling Chang and Annie Appleby for attending. And thanks to all educations for making York Centre a great place to live and learn.

Meeting Taylor Lindsay-Noel, Mom, and Jason Colero, Toronto Argonauts, at Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital

On a sunny afternoon, my constituency assistant Dave Horowitz met up with Taylor Lindsay-Noel, a gymnast and student at Northview Secondary School, who is in rehabilitation at Bloorview, her mother Rowena and Jason Colero, manager of community relations for the Toronto Argonauts on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. It warms the heart to see Taylor working hard with the professional staff at Bloorview to recover from her serious injuries, and the community support given to her thus far.

Jason presented Taylor with a signed football and a book from the Toronto Argonauts. He is standing to the left of Taylor in each of the photos. His generous support is appreciated by all of us. Thank you Jason!

The talented arts students at Northview SS hosted a fundraiser for Taylor called "Arts a la Carte" to a large audience on Thursday, December 4, 2008 in the evening. They performed a selection of traditional and new-age dance routines to the sounds of jazz, R & B, and break-dancing music, while treating us to a display of their visual arts creations. Entertaining and humourous, indeed! A thumbs up to the students who participated.

Remembrance Day, 2008

I attended the Remembrance Day Service at North York Memorial Community Hall on November 11, 2008. Trustee Mari Rutka and I layed the wreath on behalf of the Toronto District School Board. It was a well-attended and moving service. The York Mills Collegiate Institute band provided the music and Eric Chambers, President, Royal Canadian Legion, North York branch provided the Opening Remarks. Prayers were provide by Rabbi Joseph H. Kelman of Beth Emeth Bais Yehuda Synagogue.

A night of pride at W.L. Mackenzie's 48th Graduation

October 23, 2008 was a night to remember as W.L. Mackenzie held its 48th Annual Commencement. Here are some of my comments.

"Our great responsibility as educators is that when students leave our schools they take with them the understanding that the value of time in school is not only measured by a grade point average but by the strength of their character and the drive for future success.

Your journey will take you through those decisions that lead you to do the right things for the wrong reasons; the wrong things for the right reasons; but in the end no matter where you end up and what you do, I am confident that the leadership and example at Mackenzie has taught the importance of always lending a helping hand and never kicking the ladder down from behind you.

While there is a certain degree of sadness when students leave a school, there is also a sense a pride that a new generation of Canadians are moving forward. This should be a source of pride for everyone here.

I know that the dedicated staff of MacKenzie understand that our mission is to graduate students with intuitive minds and not axes to grind. And I am also confident that this graduating class will make smart choices and that parents need not have a hand on a telephone waiting for a call from a son or daughter in trouble."

Carwash and Barbeque Fundraiser for Taylor Lindsay-Noel: Sunday September 28, 2008 @ Northview SS

UPCOMING EVENT! SAVE THIS DATE!

I am honoured to lend a hand and support this Sunday's Carwash and Barbeque Fundraiser that was initiated by the Leadership Class at Northview Heights Secondary School. The fundraiser is for Northview student Taylor Lindsay Noel, a star gymnast who was paralyzed during a practice session this past July.

The road to recovery for an injury of this nature is long, arduous and takes considerable funds. Her immediate goal is to return to her Northview grade 11 class by September, 2009, a goal that can only be reached with considerable rehabilitation.

Propane Blast Repairs Update: All schools Open in York Centre

It's back to school for about 20,000 students in Ward 5. I hope everyone had a restful and fun summer. However, I realize it was not easy for many near the Wilson and Keele area. I didn't know the late District Chief Bob Leek, but we all know what he represented. When the call came he was at home, on vacation and yet he headed to the propane explosion. He passed away in the line of duty as part of a team that was protecting us, our homes, our businesses and our schools. For most of us we owe a great debt to someone we didn't even know. At the same time, Ward 5 will always be indebted to the TDSB teams in health and safety; repair and construction; communications; fellow trustees; safe schools; our counseling services; principals Elizabeth Bell (Ancaster PS) and Maria Palermo (Downsview SS); and their superintendents, Gen Ling Chang and Jeff Hainbuch. The talent of our staff were never in doubt. I am proud to say that both Ancaster PS and Downsivew SS are up and running today thanks to that great team.

Assessing the Damage, Doing the Repairs and Opening by September 2

As soon as we received official clearance, Toronto District School Board staff assessed damage to two schools in this area (Ward 5 – York Centre).

I have taken tours of the two schools damaged in my ward. Over 100 windows and frames were shattered at Downsview Secondary School. Ceiling tiles, floors and window walls also sustained damage. Ancaster Public School had 30 windows on its upper floor blown out.

I have been working with TDSB staff and the principals for both schools to take the necessary steps to evaluate the damage and begin the clean up process.

The TDSB communiations department has been very supportive. Here I am being interviewed by Galit Soloman of CTV News.

The objective is to ensure both Ancaster PS and Downsview SS are safe and that there is no risk to students and staff when school commences. I have been in touch with our facilities team and a project manager is currently working to assess the damage at the two schools."

Director of Education, Gerry Connelly stated that, “We anticipate that both of these schools will be open and ready for our students by Tuesday, September 2.”

Explosions Shake Ward 5: Radio updates explain evacuations.

Our family was awoken at 4:00 AM to explosions near the Downsview Park. The blasts shook our home and windows. Like many other neighbours we went into the street and heard more explosions and viewed an orange fireball. I took the above picture looking west along our street during the early part of the fire. Please stay tuned to local Toronto radio stations as evacuation information is being provided on a regular basis. I will be working with staff at the TDSB to see if there are any ways in which we can help out. I will be seeing whether schools can be used as evacuation centres.

Eco Summer Travel: The Greyhound bus to New York City and Back

Once again I was off to New York City with family for a short summer getaway. While the shopping is nice, I can't wait to visit the historical sites and museums. This year we visited The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Ukrainian Museum, and the main branch of the New York Public Library. We stayed in Brooklyn and took the subway into Manhattan every morning. What an urban transportation system! And talking about transportation, I considered driving or flying to New York City but in the end, we went on a Greyhound bus again. When riding the bus, one really gets a sense of the vastness of the continent, the worries of driving are left to someone else, it’s an ecological responsible way of travelling, and it provides a rare opportunity to read and relax for 10 hours.

The Canadian Young Scientist Journal (CYSJ) gives credence to the view that motivation does lead to innovation and that the written word will never go out of fashion.

The CYSJ was launched in May, 2008. It is a testament to the energy and dedication of the staff and students at Northview Heights Secondary School. Some of the writers and editors came to our board meeting on May 21, 2008 to meet with Board Chair John Campbell (Second from the right) and Director Gerry Connelly (Third from the right). Also joining the team were Superintendent Gen Ling Chang (far left) and Northview Principal Sandra Tondat (Far right). CYSJ founder and Editor-in-Chief Northview Staff member Alexandre Noukhovitch was widely congratulated for getting the project going.

When I leaf through the pages of this journal and the names of these young authors and thinkers leap off the page, I wonder who among this crowd with bring to us great breakthroughs in medicine and health that we do not know about today. Who will guide us through the next generation of space discovery; and who will ensure that the quality of life can be just as important as longevity.

Meir Medical Center: A great institution of hope, education and inspiration

On the night of May 28, I attended an event to help support Canadian Friends of Meir Medical Center, located in Tel Aviv. This facility is renowned for its advances in the medical field and its strong commitment to treat anyone and everyone who comes through its doors. This medical facility is a great lighthouse and example for others. It is said that this hospital treats 10% of Israelis. The funds raised at this event will be directed to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. The event honoured Dr. Bernard Goldman, now professor emeritus at the University of Toronto and former chief of heart surgery and surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and Women’s College Hospital . Also honoured was Toronto community activist Shirley Anne Haber. Shaarei Shomayim Synagogue in Toronto did a fantastic job of hosting this memorable event.

Lunch with Laureen Harper, the wife of the Prime Minister of Canada

Recently I was invited by news broadcaster and federal candidate Peter Kent to attend a lunch with Laureen Harper, the wife of Prime Minister Stephen Harper. The lunch gathering was a very cozy, relaxed event, which provided the opportunity to share some ideas with Ms. Harper. I asked Ms. Harper whether she would explore the idea of being an honourary national spokesperson for autism. While I didn’t really expect her to give an answer on the spot – and she was somewhat reluctant – Ms. Harper introduced me to her assistant so we can stay in touch about the suggestion. I also asked Ms. Harper to pass on my congratulations to the Prime Minister for the great speech he delivered recently at the Ricoh Centre during the Israel @ 60 celebration in Toronto. By the way, I found Laureen Harper to be outgoing, relaxed and friendly, which made for a very enjoyable event.

Recently I had the opportunity to share a few words with federal finance minister Jim Flaherty. I described some of the challenges we are facing in keeping our swimming pools open at the Toronto District School Board. I attended a high school with a pool and it was great for physical education classes and developing school spirit through a competitive school swim team. It was also essential for learning safety skills. I was hoping to tap several federal funding initiatives that promote athletics and healthy lifestyles.

I also mentioned that there is an emerging national initiative to have school boards exempt from paying GST. While the minister was attentive to these issues, he was non-committal and wanted keep the dialogue open.

We know how important it is to keep our schools and the City of Toronto clean and shining by not littering, reducing our waste through reusing and recycling household items, and either calling the city to pick-up our hazardous waste e.g. solvents, paints, or dropping them off at transfer stations located throughout the City of Toronto when open to the public.

My schools are committed to keeping their facilities clean and healthy and teaching students about the 3Rs.

A perfect way to kick off to Earth Day and to showcase our student achievements.

TUMPANE PUBLIC SCHOOL PARTICIPATES IN BRUSH-A-MANIA

Now that we are in April 2008 when rain season begins and all of the snow has melted away, we are gearing-up for Oral Health Month in Ontario. Tumpane PS students from kindergarten to grade five will be participating in oral hygiene presentations over a one-day period, with Ontario Dental Association member, Raffy Chouljian, D.D.S. and chair of Brush-a-Mania. On Wednesday, April 16, Raffy will instruct the students about how important it is to develop a proper technique when brushing their teeth for up to three minutes, and will ask that each student record their brushing times over the month of April. Upon completion of the program, students will receive a Brush-a-Mania Club Member certificate, stickers and sugarless gum.

Over 150 schools and 60,000 students will be active participants in Brush-a-Mania in 2008!

SAVE OUR PUBLIC SCHOOL POOLS ! TDSB TRUSTEES VOTE TONIGHT

It is critical that we save a majority of our public school pools from closing by the end of the academic year, and the remainder by next summer. I will be urging my colleagues to STOP the closing of these valuable community resources.

I attended a high school with a pool and it was great for physical education classes and developing school spirit through a competitive school swim team. It was also essential for learning safety skills.

I spent many years taking hundreds of campers on canoe trips in northern Ontario . Our trips were safe and enjoyable because these kids had some swim training at their local school or community centre. We were able to swim off our camp sites and in rivers with the knowledge that our campers had enough skills to get themselves back to shore in a safe and confident manner.

I urge you to contact your provincial representative and encourage them to support the local swimming pool. They are not funding this important community resource.

Once again, I will be voting to support TDSB pools and work with all levels of government to ensure this valuable resource has long term secure funding.

My assistant and I were thrilled to have set up a Ward 5 information table for the parents and students passing through the school lobby to chat with their teachers on Thursday, March 27, 2008. Parents looked through our large display of TDSB programs, services and pamphlets about student social issues, which also provided me with the opportunity to field their questions and listen to their concerns. I was pleased to meet and speak with all of you, and I plan to organize more information tables at other school events in the future. Thank you to Principal Sandra Tondat and Vice Principals, Kien Luu and Laura Pagnotta for their hospitality at Northview.

C.H. Best’s CyberArts Program highlights art Exhibit

Art work from various Toronto District School Board schools will be on display until April 2 at the Metro Hall Rotunda at 55 John Street, which is located at the southeast corner of King and John Streets, two blocks east of Spadina Avenue. One of the most striking contributions is a Geodesic Dome from C.H. Best Middle School’s Grade 7 CyberArts program. I am told that project integrates language, math, science and technology, visual art and history. Congratulations to the team at C.H. Best Middle School!

The Argos ’ anti-bullying program Huddle Up comes to Ward 5

When I was elected, I assured parents that I would do everything possible to reduce and eliminate bullying in Ward 5 schools. Bullying is destructive and hurts our efforts to create a safe and comforting learning environment at the TDSB. In order to keep this commitment, I met with the Toronto Argonauts Football Club community outreach group last summer to bring their anti-bullying Huddle Up program to Ward 5. Working with my constituency assistants David Horowitz and Danny Pivnick and superintendent Gen Ling Chang, we are bringing Huddle Up to ten Ward 5 schools. I owe a great deal of thanks to all participating principals and to the Argonauts’ Jason Colero.

In those dark days when young people have to grieve for a loved one, the organization Celebrations: In memory of Aleisha Ashley and Monique McKnight, steps-in to provide our youth with bereavement support services in the Jane-Finch community and surrounding community. The organization was established by Cleoni Crawford, the sister of Aleisha Ashley and the two families whose aim is to “inspire, educate and support youths in our community.” Celebrations has partnered with the Bereaved Families of Ontario-Toronto to implement its three services:

* Celebrations Scholarship Fund in memory of Aleisha and Monique

The scholarship fund is awarded to graduating high school students whom are attending Downsview Secondary School , Westview Centennial Secondary School and Emery Collegiate Institute. And two fundraisers are also organized: The Gospel, Arts N PRAIZE that is a gospel concert and presentation of the arts by high school students and youth from the Jane-Finch community, and Celebrations Charity Auction and Dinner to raise funds for the program.

The Celebrations Youth Bereavement is absolutely free and provides one-hour sessions at its Spot Youth Centre located at Yorkgate Mall. Two trained staff from the Bereaved Families of Ontario-Toronto is there to counsel and guide the youth attending the program.

Canadian icon provides advice on adult education

I have been listening to many seniors groups about the importance of adult and continuing education. The TDSB can regain its leadership role in this area. Continuing education is an excellent way for adults to explore new subject areas, start a new business as well as remain active in their local communities. In addition to meeting with long-term associate Lillian Morgenthau, president and founder of CARP, Canada's Association for the Fifty-Plus, pictured, I also visited with Jack Henshaw, one of the leaders with Citizens for Lifelong Learning. Adult education should be affordable and available.

On August 15, 2006 I registered as a candidate for the position of Ward 5 (York Centre) trustee for the Toronto District School Board. I have been living in the Ward for 17 years and my children have attended several Ward 5 schools. On any given lunch hour, I am biking around the York Centre meeting with residents and shopping at local businesses. I will bring enthusiasm, energy and a new vision to the job as Ward 5’s Trustee on the Toronto District School Board. Channelling this energy into new ideas, my goal is to advocate a focussed approach to fix our education system and bring to the table a mission that reflects the values of parents and teachers in the TDSB area. I will bring accountability to the position of trustee and lobby the provincial government for increased funding to education. Moreover, our public school system should receive the resources necessary to embrace schools of different philosophies and missions.
